As part of this programme the children learn how to form their letters using rhymes. This document shows you the rhymes we use so you can join in with these at home.

Week beginning 17th March

This week the Year 1 children were learning to read, recognise and sequence o'clock and half past times in their Maths lessons.

This can be a tricky task and here you can see them enjoying a reading the times game with each other after lots of hard work. Well done!

Class 1 Reception children worked with 2D shapes in their Maths lessons. They are working hard to remember the names and properties of different shape.

Here you can see them making tangram pictures using 2D shapes.

They had to select the correct shape and then make sure it was the right orientation by turning or flipping it in order to complete the picture.

Lots of mathematical language was used during this activity - well dome!

Week beginning Monday 10th March

In the last two weeks the Reception children have focused on learning about patterns in maths. They have described, continued and fixed patterns and then created their own. They have followed ABB and ABC patterns.

During this time, the Year 1 children have been learning about fractions; halves and quarters.

This week has been British Science week so the children in Class 1 watched a live programme that was broadcast from Willowbank Farm. They learnt about a day in the life of farmers and what they do. They also learnt about how we can care for our world by reducing waste and making renewable energy. The Year 1 children followed this up by using the microbits to test light levels around our school, so they could consider where the best place would be if we were to have solar panels.

The Year 1 children are also enjoying their programming beebots learning in Computing and the Reception children were keen to show off their completed beanstalks.

Today we have also had a visit from the police who have helped us gain an understanding of how they help people keep safe in our community. They spoke to the children about strangers and how to keep themselves safe. They also asked the children to learn their full name, their parents name and their address.

Week beginning Monday 24th February

Welcome back to the second half of spring term. The children have started reading Jack and the beanstalk. They will be making story maps towards the end of the week and then begin to orally retell the story. Their continuous provision time has allowed them to explore the story more.

The Year 1 children have enjoyed their first programming unit this year using the beebots. They explored what each of the command buttons do and some children even developed short sequences to move their beebot from one place to another.

Week beginning Monday 10th February

Last week the Year 1 children were Scientists. They were investigating the best material to use to make a hat for a teddy. They planned and carried out their investigation and gained a new skill of using a pipette .

Reception have been busy in their provision areas this week. They have been developing their scissor control and ability to join materials by making a dancing heart for Valentine's Day. They have been developing their writing skills by finding pictures around the room, Fred talking and recording CVC words.

Both Reception and Year 1 children worked on direction in Maths this week. We had a great morning outside on Thursday - the children gave instructions [forward, turn, left, right] to navigate through a 5x5 grid from the start square to the finish square - showed super communication skills and group work - they did a brilliant job - well done!

In Art we have been looking at printing. They made some beautiful prints today using a small plastic bag, some elastic bands and paint! Wonderful work - well done!

The Year 1 children were able to retrieve their knowledge from last year and share it with the Reception children.

The children in Year 1 have been Scientists investigating objects that float and sink and thinking about why this is.

In maths this week, the Year 1 children have started counting in multiples of 2, 5 and 10 from 0 to 100. It would be great to see them practising this skill at home as it will really help them as they progress into Year 2 and start to learn the multiplication facts.

In Reception the children have been comparing amounts using 'more than', 'less than' and 'equal to'.

The children really enjoyed investigating the different types of leaves and the trees they grow on.

They used magnifying glasses to look carefully at the features of different leaves - toothed edges, ragged edges, different numbers of lobes as well as the different beautiful colours.

We are working with the story of Stick Man in English - the children had great fun making leaf friends for Stick Man!

Week beginning 28th October 2024

In the week before half term the children got to taste some India food and linked this to their learning in Science about their senses.

They are working on instructions in English and next week will be writing instructions of how they made their jam sandwich.

I'm sure they will happily make a picnic sandwich tea for you !!!!

Here are pictures of year 1 children in action.

You will find pictures on Tapestry for Reception children.

Tuesday 24th September

Today the children from Class 1 walked to church as part of their RE learning. We are learning about special places and Wrawby St Mary's Church is a special place for many people. Whilst we were there we were learning about the significance of the font, altar and candle in the church. We will follow up our visit with further learning in our RE lessons. The children showed our school values throughout the visit and Reverend Julie praised the children for their behaviour and concentration. Well done Class 1!

Monday 23rd September

On Monday we welcomed Sarah from the Get Ahead Sports Partnership into school to conduct our annual intra-school cross country event. In true cross country style, the weather was wet but the children showed resilience and battled through racing to the best of their ability. We were so proud of them all.

Week beginning Monday 16th September

We have had another happy week in Class 1.

The children looked at portraits by Guiseppe Arcimboldo and were inspired to make their own portraits in his style - they did a great job!

We had a visitor in school this week - Thank you Mrs Alldridge for bringing chicks in for the children to see. They were captivated by the loud sounds the chicks made looking for their mother and the sounds the mother hen made as she told her chicks how to eat the food. The chicks were 'fluffy and soft' and 'very cute'.

Week beginning Monday 9th September

It has been lovely to welcome our new Reception children into Class 1 and welcome back our Year 1 children. The Reception children have come into school confidently ready to start their learning journey with us. We are proud of how our Year 1 children have made the Reception children feel so welcome and they have helped them established our routines and expectations. The children have all mixed well, learning from each other already.

In our Science learning, which the Reception take part in too as it forms part of their Early Years learning about Understanding the world, the children have learnt the names of different body parts. In future weeks we will be learning about our senses, eating healthy and how to look after our teeth. The children also knew lots of names of parts inside our body too.
