Welcome to Class 2!
We’re so excited to share our learning journey with you. This page is designed for parents to stay connected with what’s happening in our classroom. Here you’ll find important information and photographs that showcase the amazing activities and achievements of our children.
Thank you for visiting—together, we’ll make this a fantastic year of growth and discovery!
Please see below the parent information sheet for further information about your child's learning and spellings covered each half-term.
In Year 2, children need to learn the 2, 5, and 10 times tables, including their corresponding division facts and recognising odd/even numbers.
In Year 3, children must master the 3, 4, and 8 times tables while continuing to practice the 2, 5, and 10 tables.
Below are some links to websites which we use in school which the children can also practise at home. Children have been given a personal log in for TTRock stars.
If you have misplaced this, please do not hesitate to get in touch, and we can issue you with a new one.
We hope everyone had a happy and restful Easter break. A warm welcome back to all our children and families as we begin Summer Term 1. We are looking forward to an exciting term ahead filled with new learning, opportunities and lots of fun.
Week commencing Monday 11th May
On Wednesday in English we completed a short burst writing task. The children were informed that Mr Brown was thinking of banning football from the playground. The children had a debate thinking of reasons for against football. They then wrote a letter to Mr Brown explaining their argument.
On Monday in English, Class 2 took part in an engaging lesson designed to introduce persuasive writing in a way that was meaningful and exciting for the children.
Lesson Hook
At the beginning of the lesson, a learning hook was used to capture the children’s interest. A dog lead, food bowl, dog food and soft toy dog were placed at the front of the classroom, along with an envelope labelled “Class 2! from Max the dog 🐾”. This immediately sparked curiosity and enthusiasm, encouraging the children to wonder what the lesson would be about.
The Letter from Max
A child read aloud a letter from Max the dog. In the letter, Max explained that he really wanted to live with a child but had heard that some grown-ups thought children were too noisy or might forget to feed a dog. Max asked the children to help decide whether children should be allowed to have pet dogs.
This helped the children to form an emotional connection with the character and understand that they were being asked to take on an important role.
Following the letter, the children discussed the question on their tables. They shared different viewpoints and began giving reasons for their opinions. This supported the development of speaking and listening skills, confidence, and respectful discussion.
The children were then told that they would be working towards writing a persuasive text by the end of the unit. This gave their learning a clear purpose and helped them understand why they were sharing ideas and forming opinions.
In Science, Year 2 have been learning about the different parts of plants. As part of their investigative work, they have been exploring edible plants and making predictions about which will grow first.
Week commencing Monday 26th April
Year 3 have been busy investigating how water is transported in plants in their science lessons. The children set up a simple but exciting experiment by placing plants into water mixed with food colouring. Over time, they carefully observed and recorded the changes, noticing how the coloured water travelled up the stem and into the leaves.
As part of their investigation, the children also looked closely at celery using magnifying glasses, where they were able to spot the tiny holes and tubes that help transport water through the plant. This hands‑on learning helped them deepen their understanding of how plants stay healthy, while developing their observation skills and scientific curiosity.

On Wednesday we welcomed Sarah Burdett into school to run our Quad Kids Event. The children took part in 4 events ( 40m sprint, standing long jump, 400m run, and vortex howler throw)
Week commencing Monday 20th April
Today, Class 2 were shown a box I had found in the playground as part of our new English hook. It was full of old metal pieces. The children discussed the following questions in groups.
Who might collect things like this?
What do you think the metal bits could become?
What kind of place do you think the owner of the box lives in?
The children engaged enthusiastically in discussion and produced a range of imaginative ideas.
Week commencing Monday 30th March
On Wednesday we hosted an Easter Craft afternoon. All wider family members were invited into school and the children moved round the 4 classrooms in family groups, creating 4 items to take home. Many thanks to all who attended and made this a memorable afternoon. The children had lots of fun.
On Tuesday we visited church for our annual Easter service. Class 2 performed their Easter song, 'One Life' which they have been perfecting in their music lessons with Miss Oliver.
It was also lovely to see some of our class performing with the choir. These children have been giving up their lunch times on a Tuesday to rehearse with the choir, enthusiastically practising their songs for church. Amazing work! We are so proud of you all.
Week Commencing Monday 16th March
On Wednesday morning during our English lesson, the lights were dimmed and there was a mysterious knock on the door. This was the start of our new English writing hook linked to the book, 'Stig of the Dump' by Clive King.
We imagined Barney was at home. When he opened the door —Stig was standing there. Muddy. Curious. Wide-eyed. And he stepped inside…
The children uncovered objects in the middle of the carpet (my story sack).
They found:
A hairdryer
A remote controller
An iPad
A torch
We discussed what Stig would think it is? What does he try to do with it?
We thought about other stories we have read in the past where characters discover things they have never encountered before.

It has been lovely to see the sun shining this week. Some of the girls in Class 2 have been very busy during break times making daisy chains.
Week Commencing Monday 2nd March
The class took part in an exciting cricket taster session that quickly became the highlight of their day on Wednesday. The fresh air and gentle sunshine set the perfect scene as the children eagerly practised their throwing and catching skills. Laughter filled the playground as they worked together in pairs and small groups, concentrating hard yet enjoying every moment. With each successful catch and accurate throw, their confidence grew. By the end of the session, the whole class was buzzing with enthusiasm, proud of what they had achieved.
Spring Term 2
Welcome Back After Half Term!
We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable break. Did anyone make pancakes for Shrove Tuesday? We would love to hear about your toppings and creations!
This week we ease back into our routine, and on Wednesday we will be visiting church for Ash Wednesday. It’s a special time for reflection as we begin the season of Lent.
We are looking forward to a calm and positive first week back together.
Let’s make it a great one!
Our Wellbeing Afternoon on Wednesday, was a huge success. All of the children have been talking about it and they all experienced 4 activities across the afternoon to focus in on techniques to support with mindfulness. The activities included: Mindfulness colouring, Yoga, Just Dance and the Parachute Session.
Week commencing Monday 2nd February
In gymnastics this week, Class 2 have been exploring rolling as a way of travelling. The children have demonstrated control in a variety of sideways rolls, including log, egg, teddy bear, dish and pencil. They then linked these rolls to make a short sequence.
This half-term in art we have been sculpting! We have been using the work of Quentin Blake to inspire us as we work with clay, manipulating, joining and making coils. We then designed and made a model character.
In Science, the Year 3 children have been investigating what soil is made from and how it is formed. We put some soil into cups and added some water and waited a few hours before observing what we could see.

In RE this week, the children have been learning all about Chad Varah. Chad Varah was born in Barton-Upon Humber in 1911. I wonder if they can remember which charity he set up. There is a clue in the picture below.

In Science, the Year 3 children have been looking at the properties of rocks as part of their rocks, soils and fossils unit. The children used magnifying glasses to look closely at the rocks and generated a bank of adjectives which helped them sort the rocks into groups.
Christmas Play Update
The children were very excited to discover that this year’s Christmas production is called Christmas with the Aliens! They’ve already started learning the songs and are enjoying the rehearsals. Next week, they will be bringing home their lines to learn. Please support them where possible by helping them practise at home. Thank you for your continued support!
Class 2 have been busy practising songs for our Remembrance service in their music lesson. They have also made some poppies to decorate the church.

It was great to see the children in their scary Halloween costumes for the spooky disco. I think a great time was been had by all.

Congratulations to all the children who took part in the cross country event on Tuesday! Your determination, teamwork, and perseverance were truly inspiring. It was heart warming to see you cheering each other on and pushing through to complete the course.

The sun was shining for us on Monday afternoon as we headed out for PE. Class 2 enjoyed practising their throwing and catching skills in our Bench Ball unit.
In computing the children learnt that people can be described using attributes. They practised using attributes to describe images of people and other children in the class.

On Tuesday afternoon we attended church for our whole school annual Harvest Festival. Many thanks to all who attended and sent in produce. Class 2 sang, 'Thank God for the Harvest' and decorated the church with some of their lovely art work.

The Year 3 children have been learning the names of different animals in Spanish. They enjoyed playing a game of pairs to test their knowledge at the end of the lesson. I wonder if they can tell you the names of some animals at home.

In science the Year 3 children have been investigating how shoes move on different surfaces. The children have worked like scientists making careful observations and taking accurate measurements using a Newton metre.

Well Done, Cross Country Stars!
A huge well done to all of the children in our class who took part in the cross country event after school on Monday.
Your determination, effort, and positive attitude were truly inspiring. Whether you sprinted to the finish or paced yourself with perseverance, you showed great courage and commitment.
You represented our school brilliantly, and we are incredibly proud of each and every one of you.
A special congratulations to Joseph, who won overall in his age group — an outstanding achievement and a moment to be truly proud of!

Phew! Another busy week in school, we continue to work on telling the time in maths, such an important life skill. Year 2 have been working on telling the time to quarter to and quarter past and Year 2 to the five minutes and this week we have been introduced to clock faces with Roman Numerals.
In English we are working on a diary entry based on our class text, Silly Billy. We have been busy planning the text.
In art we continue to develop our sketching skills and have been drawing body parts in the style of Quentin Blake, we are looking forward to putting all these skills together to create a whole person. The question is will we choose to draw a good or bad character?
In science the Year 3 children have been testing the strength of different types of magnets.

Class 2 have been introduce to the term 'pictogram' today in computing. The children created pictograms manually and then we progressed to creating them using a computer.

The Year 3 children have enjoyed working scientifically to identify magnetic and non-magnetic materials in the school environment.

A great week back in school. Our PE lessons are on Monday and Thursday. Please have your kits in school on those days.
In maths we have been working on telling the time. This is a really important life skill. To help your child you could discuss clocks around your home, ask them the time at varying points throughout the day, discuss the difference between am and pm and Year 3 need to recognise roman numerals on clock faces.
