Art and Design Curriculum Intent Statement

At Wrawby St. Mary’s CE Primary, we provide learning experiences that engage, inspire and challenge pupils, giving them the confidence to succeed.  We give children the opportunities to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, encouraging their creativity. We provide the children with the knowledge of great artists, craft makers and designers in the wider world.  All children need a meaningful context, a clear purpose and concrete sensory experience in order to learn and progress in Art and Design.

In lessons, children at Wrawby have access to a variety of media, e.g. pencil, charcoal, pastels, paints and clay in order to develop a broad experience. Children are encouraged to think about their work, refine and develop their artistic pieces, working on skills they are taught. During their lessons, they have an opportunity to respond to their own, their peers and famous pieces of artwork

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

    • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
    • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
    • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
    • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
