Our teacher is Mrs Turney
Welcome to our class page. We’re kicking off an exciting year full of inspiring learning, creative thinking, and memorable moments. This is where we’ll showcase all the fantastic things happening in our classroom—from brilliant ideas to proud achievements. Keep checking in to see what we’ve been up to!
Our school visit to Bempton Cliffs was very much enjoyed by the class. We were lucky to have some very knowledgeable volunteers who led our groups around the reserve, taught us about different birds, provided binoculars for us to use, and set up telescopes to look at nesting birds in the cliffs. Have a look at some pictures of what we got up to!
This week is Science related again! We have been thinking about how we can help the birds in our local area. Using bird seed, peanuts, mealworms and lard, we have created a healthy concoction for our local birds to eat. We also used some DT skills, collecting sticks, tying string to them, making a hole in the pot and threading it through. Once set, the pots will – hopefully – be removed. The string is for hanging them in the wildlife area and the stick is to allow the birds to sit on while eating. We had so much food left, we made some without sticks too! These could sit on a bird table or a wall instead.
*Update! We now have some photos of us hanging our bird feeders in the wildlife area!
This week, in Science, the children have been learning more about their Science Pioneer, Mya-Rose Craig. As an ornithologist and environmentalist, she is a big advocate for caring for wildlife. We did some practice for our school trip too, by doing some birding in our school grounds. We watched for birds and then tried to identify the different types, making a tally as we saw them.
In Art this half term, we have been practising our sculpting skills using clay. We had a practise go a couple of weeks ago and then, this week, we have made our final sculptures. We have created our own mini version of a temple - some 2D and some 3D. The detail that has been put into these is creations is great, take a look for yourself! *Photos from both week,
This week in Science, we looked at the role of blood in our body. We learnt that the red blood cells carry oxygen around our body, the white blood cells fight infection, platelets help heal our wounds, and the plasma helps transport all of those cells, plus nutrients, around our body. To help with our understanding, we made our own blood using water, food colouring, cereal and marshmallows to represent the different parts of blood. See if your child can tell you which is which!
The children worked in groups, with one stanza of the poem per group, to perform a Christmas poem called, The Christmas Pine by Julia Donaldson.
This week in Science, we have been looking at forces, specifically water resistance. We experimented with different shapes of playdoh to see which ones would create the least amount of drag or resistance, timing our tests. We had a lot of fun with this one!
We had a visit from the Planetarium this week. In the time before and after our session, we worked in groups to create a poster about the Solar System and then presented it to the rest of the class!
Building on our Bhangra dance skills from the last few weeks, we created our own routines today! Enjoy our videos!
*Videos had to be shortened due to size.
**Some children chose not to be filmed.
This half term in PE, our Wednesday session focuses on dance. This week, we learned some dance moves for Bhangra style dancing. They are named, roly poly, moustache, rainbow and firework due to the shapes you make with your arms. Ask your children to show you!
Week beginning: 20th October
This week, we did our end of unit assessment for Science. For this, we went round the school grounds to find what living things we could find. We also talked about what we might have seen before (e.g. squirrels, cats) that weren't here currently, but also what might be around in different seasons (e.g. daffodils in spring). We then used this list of living things to create a food chain and a classification key to demonstrate our understanding of living things and grouping them.
This half term, we have been learning some sketching skills. We have looked specifically at tone and how to use pressure and/or layering to achieve different tones with the same medium. We tried first with sketching pencils and then with charcoal too.
In PE, we have been learning skills relating to netball. We have been practising different throwing types: chest pass, overhead pass, and bounce pass. The children have worked hard to get these techniques right, and with their catching skills too. Next week, we will be moving on to intercepting the ball as part of netball game skills.
This week, during ICT with Miss Balderson, Class 3 have worked fantastically to create dataloggers using microbits! The class coded their own device and then used it to collect different temperatures around the class using their knowledge of the sensors! Well done class 3!
This week, the children were challenged to create a bridge that could hold three toys cars on. They were given paper, tape, glue and scissors to create this. The children worked in pairs or threes to come up with an idea and execute their plan. It was wonderful to see such great teamwork skills amongst the groups and how they problem solved when a test run went wrong! Take a look at the photos and see which bridges were successful!
