Science Curriculum Intent

At Wrawby St Mary’s, our science curriculum is rooted in our school vision: “We strive for a full life in mind, body, heart and spirit to plan, prosper and give hope and a future to all.” We believe science is a vital part of children’s understanding of the world and an opportunity to create awe, spark curiosity and encourage responsibility. Through an engaging and inclusive curriculum, we nurture future pioneers and leaders who are excited by discovery, confident in their questioning, and empowered to use their learning for good.

We want our children to experience science not only as a subject, but as a meaningful journey that helps them explore their place in the world. Learning is hands-on, thought-provoking and underpinned by key scientific knowledge and skills. Children are encouraged to investigate, observe, and reflect – developing their ability to think critically, solve problems, and apply what they have learned to real-life contexts. Throughout our curriculum, especially when learning about different pioneers, we hope to inspire learners and address science capital, teaching children that ‘science can be for me’, giving hope and a future to all.

Spirituality is at the heart of our approach. We support children to feel joy in the wow times – those moments of awe when exploring space, nature or the power of forces. We help them find strength in the ow times – when results are unexpected, or challenges arise – and discover hope in the now times, as they consider how science can help us care for creation, improve lives and solve global problems. Science opens doors to thinking about something greater than ourselves and our role as the gardeners and caretakers of the world.

Our curriculum is designed to be broad, balanced and relevant, with clear progression in both knowledge and enquiry skills. Through strong cross-curricular links, especially with maths and RE, science becomes part of a wider understanding of life and learning. Above all, we aim for every child to feel love, challenge and excitement in their scientific learning – inspired to look outward, think deeply and lead with compassion.
