Year 1 Spelling lists

Week beginning Monday 12th October

This week in maths, Reception have been subitising - recognising how many objects there are without counting them one by one.

The children had lots of fun spotting groups of dots and objects and showing off their quick-thinking maths skills!

As part of their athletics unit, 'Personal Best' the children have been learning and developing a range of athletic skills. This week, the children challenged themselves to achieve a personal best in a variety of activities, including underarm throwing, jumping for height, jumping for distance, 1-to-2-footed jumps, speed bounce and running. They showed determination and enthusiasm as they practised these skills and will continue to work on improving their performances next week. Here are a few pictures of them in action.

Class 1 are embracing autumn following our Harvest Service at church last week. In class, we have been enjoying the stories P for Pumpkin: God's Harvest Alphabet and Leaf Man. Inspired by these books, the children have been creating their own Leaf Men, using a variety of natural materials in our provision area.

Week beginning Monday  5th October

In maths this week, the Year 1 children have been busy using the ‘Build It, Draw It’ approach to represent numbers from 1 to 20 using Base 10 equipment. They have been developing their understanding of place value by building and drawing numbers before ordering them accurately on a number line. The children have worked enthusiastically and shown growing confidence when comparing and sequencing numbers.

Week beginning Monday 28th September

🍂 Class 1 Autumn Art

This week in Art, Class 1 have been learning about the artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo, who lived over 500 years ago. He is famous for his imaginative “composite head” portraits, in which human faces are cleverly created using arrangements of fruit, vegetables, flowers, books and even animals.

Inspired by Arcimboldo’s unusual artwork, Class 1 went exploring in the school grounds to gather a variety of autumnal natural materials, including colourful leaves, twigs, fruit, seeds and other seasonal treasures. They then carefully arranged their findings to create their own vibrant autumn portraits in the style of Arcimboldo.

The children had great fun experimenting with different shapes, colours and textures and showed wonderful creativity and imagination in their finished artwork.

🐻 Goldilocks says sorry! 🐻

There was great excitement in Class 1 today when a mystery letter arrived!

It turned out to be from Goldilocks, who wanted to apologise to the Three Bears for eating their porridge, breaking their chairs and sleeping in their beds.

Goldilocks decided that a letter wasn’t quite enough, so she also sent in some ham and jam sandwiches as a special apology! 🥪

Class 1 were more than happy to help taste them, and the verdict was unanimous: YUMMY!

What a lovely, exciting start to our next piece of English writing! ✏️

Week beginning Monday 7th September

The children have made a fantastic start to this new school year. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new Reception children and also children new to the school. Please watch this page for updates regarding what your child is learning in school and all the extra bits that make Wrawby an irresistible place to learn.

Goldilocks made a mess!! We walked into our classroom to find that Goldilocks had left food all over. She had also left us the story of Goldilocks and the three bears. We have read the story and we are using the story props to retell the story in our own words.

Exploring Our Classroom

The children have also had a wonderful time exploring the many different areas of our classroom this week. They have been busy discovering new activities, playing together and becoming familiar with their new learning environment. It has been lovely to see their confidence growing as they explore, create and learn alongside their friends.
